As evenings start getting darker quicker and days are not as warm you might be forgiven for not getting out for that long walk or swim in the sea, but you still need to take care of yourself and look after your health. It is very important that you continue to eat well and take even better care of yourself during the winter.

As autumn and winter begin to draw in there is no need to stop the healthy lifestyle and healthy eating regime that you have been sticking to all summer, keep up with eating five fruit and vegetables a day and make sure to try and do 20 minutes of exercise a day. Here are a few more tips to keep you healthy during the dark evenings.

Studies have suggested that you need to drink around eight glasses of water a day. This can help to flush a lot of toxins out of your system but it can also help with keeping your skin looking good and hydrated. If you allow yourself to become dehydrated then this can lead to headaches and you can also become more tired and less alert at work. Drinking too much coffee is not as good for hydration as it has some diuretic effects, tea is better, but they should be used alongside any glasses of water you drink to keep you hydrated.

If you are struggling to eat as healthy and balanced diet as you might during the summer, then consider taking a good quality multi-vitamin. Perhaps you might not be eating as much fresh fruit as the season comes to an end, so a vitamin tablet can help to make up for any shortfall in you intake. However if possible ensure that there are no lapses in your healthy eating, and make sure that your diet is as balanced and varied as it can be and was during the summer.

An underused form of vitamins and minerals which people don’t often consider is flowers and plants. Flowers from plants like the alliums family, leeks, garlic and chives, are really tasty and can be added to cooking or salads to add extra flavour and goodness. Dandelion leaves are great in salads as they provide an extra bit of peppery flavour and the petals from roses can be used to dress desserts and sweet dishes and can also be eaten. Flowers are a great way to spice up your food during the autumn months.

Having a bunch of flowers delivered can not only brighten up your house but why not let them liven up your food? Jasmine can be used to flavour teas and also to infuse rice and has a lot of healing properties. Flowers from marigolds can be used to give a huge amount of colour to salads and they also add a peppery taste which can work well with pasta or fish dishes. Again all these things can help to add a bit of variety and spice to your diet over the winter months.

Other useful plants for your kitchen cupboards include lemon balm which can be used in tea and is particularly good for upset stomachs, dandelions not only add to salads but can also be infused in hot water to make a drink good for your liver if you are detoxing. Echinacea has been used for many centuries as a remedy for colds and flu and rose hips are very high in vitamin C to help prevent colds and other illnesses. For centuries flowers have been used in medicine and pharmaceutical companies are now looking more closely at them to try and locate more drugs and compounds to exploit. So why not give it a go and let nature’s natural remedy perk you up this winter.
